POPULAR FLYING MAGAZINE – MARCH 1933

The 100 signed copies of “The Camels are Coming” referred to here would NOT have been first editions.

The first edition of “Camels” was published in September 1932.  The print run is unknown, but would have been relatively small for a new author

and many copies would have gone to libraries.  “The Camels are Coming” was reprinted in both late 1932 and early 1933.

This advert in Popular Flying is in the March 1933 edition, some six months after the first edition of “The Camels are Coming”, which must have sold out by then because of the reprinting.

I believe the 100 signed copies would have been either second or third editions.  The reason I say that is that I know someone who has a signed second edition of “The Camels are Coming”

and here is a picture of their signed book

The position of the John Hamilton sun dial logo at the bottom of the spine shows this is not the first edition.  The first edition – uniquely – had the sun dial logo halfway up the spine

The signature on the above Camels are Coming is virtually identical to the one on my “Fighting Planes and Aces” below.

If Johns was signing 100 copies of each book, he may very well even have signed them all on the same day.
