THRILLING FLIGHTS
First Published in June 1936 – 224 pages (original price 3
shillings 6d)
Having viewed the original first edition in the Bodleian Library,
Oxford, I can confirm that the original first edition can be identified as
follows:-
It has a thirty page catalogue in the rear. The catalogue is headed “AVIATION – GENERAL”
and the first book advertised is “Eagle of Lille” by Max Immelmann
This book was
edited by W. E. Johns but also contains his account of being shot down on 16th
September 1918!
First Edition – you can still make out
the faded original book price on the spine – 3/6. Unfortunately the tear at the bottom right of
the cover illustration is where Howard Leigh’s signature was!
This dust wrapper has been repriced 4/-
over the original price of 3/6. You can
see the signature of the cover artist – Howard Leigh – who was effectively W.E.
Johns’ brother-in-law.
This dust wrapper has been repriced 1/3
– under the original price of 3/6
