GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE GEM

“The Gem” was first published in February 1907 and ran to 1663 issues, with the final issue being dated 30th December 1939 when

“The Gem” merged with “The Triumph” due to wartime paper shortages.

It was originally published by the Amalgamated Press Ltd.

W. E. Johns only had the above two stories serialised in “The Gem”.  His work was in just these twenty-one issues, with a gap of over six years between the stories.

Johns’ work was mainly serialised in THE MODERN BOY but that ceased publication on 14th October 1939, the exact same date

as the first part of “Biggles’ South Sea Adventure” (published in book form as “Biggles in the South Seas”) was published in the Gem.
